Stealing from the Stealer, or ‘The Resteal’
The process of stealing blinds has become a pretty prevalent and well-known topic in the world of poker online, even for those players who know little to nothing about the casino game. Any bet made in position is often jeered at as someone trying to steal the blinds, and often, if the player is of a certain time, can indeed be what is happening. Recognizing, then, the patterns in which a player will raise in position (or out of it) trying to steal the blinds, and using your own method of ‘restealing,’ from their steal, can be a great way to accumulate chips, especially in middle rounds of a tournament.
One of the keys to restealing is noticing which players steal and when they steal, how often. Finding a player who will raise from the button or in the cut off every time it is folded around to him are good targets to resteal from.
When noticing a poker player has been raising a lot from certain positions, putting in a reraise thereafter (making sure no other players get in the way) can pick up not only the blinds, but that stealer bet. Some players will give up quickly on their steal in the face of this kind of aggression, though others may cling closer. Testing the waters (and watching other test the waters), and putting that information to work, is just as valuable as the chips you accumulate.
